Rebar Anchors
An Important Link in the Structural Connection
The primary function of the Weldable Rebar Anchor is to anchor rebar to structural steel columns and beams. The secondary benefit is to install a coupling that can withstand welding and thereby avoid welding the rebar directly to the steel.
Fig. 1
Shown is a #D260-400180 Bar Lock Weldable Coupler.
The beveled edge is shown that allows for a penetration weld. This is a 3-set screw model for # 6 Rebar. Additional sizes can be found here.
The Weldable Couplers, both Type I or Type II, are designed to be penetration welded to a structural member. This process, a full 360° weld, will significantly increase the temperature of the steel in the welding area. The Weldable Coupler is made from steel that can be heated and retain the tensile and yield strength necessary for a Type I or II connection. Often this is an A108 or C1018 grade. If the rebar were welded directly to the steel member, heating it to these temperatures would compromise the tensile strength of the Rebar and invalidate the connection.

Dayton Superior D106 and D360
Weldable Couplers have internal
threads, which are available as
straight or tapered thread. Either will
develop a Type II connection. Again,
note beveled end.
The penetration weld is the basis of the strength of the connection. Couplers that are not beveled should not be used as anchors. They are intended as Rebar Connectors or Splices, joining two pieces of rebar.

Shown is a Dayton Superior #7 SCA
Bar Lock Rebar Connector.
It is intended to connect two rebar
lengths. Due to the flat end
surfaces it cannot be properly
welded form to form a Type I or II
anchor connection.
There are various Rebar Anchor and Coupler manufacturers including Dayton Superior, Lenton (now known as nVent Lenton), BarSplice, and others. Regardless, they all specify their Rebar Coupling products as Type I or II using the same standards. In that system they offer Set Screw Anchors and Threaded Anchors.
Along with the Weldable Rebar Connectors, The Steel Supply Company offer a complete line of Structural Masonry Anchors, and a wide range of fabricating and erecting components for the Structural Steel and Construction trades.
