With any project calling for embedded Wedge Inserts the important criteria are;
Pull Out Strength, Cavity Dimensions, Askew Head Bolt Dimensions, Taped Face.
But equally important, Availability.
Availability - Wedge Inserts, like Anchor Bolts, have to be coordinated with a concrete pour schedule. In short that means, “Have them on time.” To ensure the Wedge Inserts your project requires are available when you need them The Steel Supply Company keeps ample inventory and safety stock well in advance. Read below about reserve stock.
This also covers the required Askew Head Bolts in multiple lengths. They can be ordered together or separately but if ordering the Wedge Inserts and Askew Head Bolts from two different sources be sure the bolt head is compatible with the Wedge Insert.
Pull Out Strength – This is the most critical of all the requirements of a Wedge Insert. The Steel Supply company uses random sample tests to assure required pull-out strength. These are destructive tests that stress the insert to its breaking point. With good, sound manufacturing practices and sample testing, The Steel Supply Company can assure you will get excellent quality Wedge Inserts. Detailed test results can be provided by contacting us at info@thesteelsupplyco.com.
Figure X
Graph shows the tensile force exerted as the test attempted to break the face of the Wedge Insert with pull-out force. This sample reached 29,713 lbf before fracturing.
Cavity Dimensions –Cavity dimensions have to allow the Askew Bolt head full travel inside the cavity. It Is also important the Askew Head Bolt makes full contact with the back face of the insert
Figure X
Front view of the Wedge Insert shows the Askew Bolt flush on one side of the slot. (Red Arrow) In this position it is essential the head still makes adequate contact on the opposite side. (Red Circle)
Askew Head Bolt – Along with Head Dimensions, Tensile and Shear strength are critical to securing the Relieving Angle.
Taped Face – This is often overlooked but very important. The taped face ensures that no cement will find its way into the cavity during the concrete pour. Even with the Wedge Insert secured thoroughly in the frames, the force of the wet cement being poured and the exothermic reaction as it cures can move the insert off the frame. Any cement leeching into the cavity can render the insert useless.
As mentioned above, stock is available long in advance. Also, once you are awarded a project, The Steel Supply Company can set inventory on reserve to further assure you will have it when needed. Call or email to discuss this with a Sales Representative. 631-250-3754 or info@thesteelsupplyco.com
Note: All Wedge Inset projects require H.D.G. Slotted Shims. Along with a complete supply of Wedge Inserts and Askew Head Bolts, The Steel Supply Company stocks an unlimited supply of shims in all sizes and slot widths, galvanized and ready to go.
